I dont agree with taking the student exam away. We're trying to mentor students, bring the new HR people into HR the right way. If students are actively involved in their student chapter, following a SHRM approved curriculum, complete the internship thing and have high grades, lets let them take the exam. Of course the overall average score is going to be lower, they dont have the exempt level experience but if we dont help them get some experience, they'll have a harder time getting that exempt level experience.

Matthew, great post. You made some great points.

The PHR exam is 25% knowledge based, 50% application and 25% synthesis. When I was involved with the focus group, I made the suggestion that a separate exam be created for students that would be knowledge based, thereby making the distinction between experienced, tested HR professionals and students.

Change always comes slow and as workplace issues become increasingly complex and HR professionals continue to diligently work hard to “Serve the Profession” and “Advance the Profession”, more employers will understand what the value of hiring a certified HR professional brings to their organization.
