Work with meaning and purpose

One of my passions, if you’ve never had the opportunity to hear it directly from my lips, is helping others to find work they love. When someone has a job that is meaningful to them, then it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. They can take something as simple as customer service and make it their own. I want to work with people who have passion for what they do.

By the way, I’m rocking my new favorite T-shirt from HRevolution in this short video. Thanks, Rypple!

Ben, I am not exaggerating when I say this…this post is my favorite one you’ve ever done. And, having it as a vlog just took that up a notch. Finding meaning and purpose at work is so important. It can change us from people who just go through the day to day motions to people who innovate, create, and achieve.

I love the story about the janitor. I work in a children’s hospital where the mission of EVERY employee is to “do what’s right for kids”. Each one of us can articulate how what we do helps save children’s lives, helps make them heal, and helps their families. It’s a wonderful feeling.

Thanks for this post. GREAT job!

You said a lot in 2:44. I live in a state capitol and so often hear public employees remark about how they hate thier job. That is so sad. I loved the story about the janitor. Think if you could have everyone in your organization have the understanding, and taking the pride in thier work, as that individual does, what a fine organization you would have. Keep rockin’ it Ben!

@Dave I can’t even begin to imagine what that would be like, but I know government organizations are about as far from “loving this job” as you can get! :-)
@Trish Thanks! I really enjoy rambling about it, plus I got an opportunity to wear my favorite new t-shirt. It’s all a ploy, really. ;-)

  3. […] talked before about meaningful and purposeful work. We all want to know that our work is more than just another hour wasted like a rat in a wheel. But […]

  4. […] I actually looked at the archive and realized I recorded a video nearly 8 years ago on how to work with purpose. It’s pretty early in my video recording days, which means the quality is iffy and you get to see the version of me that was brand new to this whole world of HR, but if you want to subject yourself to it, here’s the link. :-) […]
